From
BRUCE ROSCOE,
A group of Chinese scientists has completed an Antarctic expedition training course at the National Institute of Polar Research in Tokyo, moving China closer to its goal of despatching scientific expeditions to the continent by 1985. Japanese scientists at the institute for the past three months have been teaching eight Chinese counterparts how to build and run a base on the Antarctic and how to live and conduct scientific experiments under harsh polar conditions. scientific research work that would qualify the country for Antarctic Treaty membership. According to the institute, the course included lessons in assembling and operating snowmobiles, installing communications and fuel supply systems, and the procuring and shipping of equipment for Antarctic use.
The institute would continue to co-operate with China’s plans for Antarctic activities by sending scientific papers and other reference material to the National Committee for Antarctic Research in Peking.
