Student jobs

Sir,—l take issue with the statements reportedly made by Mr Post of Plant indexation, Ltd, Taupo, in the article “Students prefer to be on the dole” (“The Press,” December 14). Commission selling can be unrewarding, unless the salesperson has the appropriate communication skills and related selling experience. The often exaggerated claims of some employers as to weekly earnings are misleading. Many students have attempted commission oriented jobs before and are aware of the numerous pitfalls. This week, at the Student Job Search Centre in Christchurch, we have had two cases brought to our attention of students who have worked hard for a month and received only a few dollars in total payment. The number of students vulnerable to misleading advertising is decreasing. The dole has nothing whatsoever to do with it—Yours, etc.,

DAVID SCHUMACHER, Student Job Search Fieldworker. December 14, 1982.
