’Bok tour conviction quashed

PA Wellington A Springbok tour protester has had his conviction quashed and three others have had their sentences reduced in a written judgment by the High Court in Wellington. They were among 18 protesters who had gone to the fourth floor of the St George Hotel, in Wellington, where the Springbok team was thought to be staying on August 8. 1981. Mr Justice Quillam quashed a conviction against Alan Thomas Bilton. 30. a strongroom assistant. Bilton had claimed he had not heard any warning to leave the hotel, and was entitled to a finding that his defence had not been rejected, his Honour said.

All the other appeals against conviction were dismissed.

Three appeals against sentence were allowed. Stephen Neville Minto. 20. a student, Adam William Gifford. 22, a researcher. and Donald Frank Polly, 45, a motor mechanic, were each fined $l4O. In the case of Minto, the fine was quashed and he was ordered to do 16 hours community service. The fines imposed on Gifford and Polly were reduced to $lOO.
