House ends year on busy note

PA Wellington The Opposition moved no confidence in the Government yesterday morning on the last day of Parliament, declaring it should immediately call for a General Election.

The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Rowling, moved the motion near the end of a marathon 15-hour session which saw five new bills introduced, as well as the

complete passage into law of the Economic Stabilisation Amendment Bill, plugging the gap in the wage freeze caused by the recent Court of Appeal decision. Mr Rowling told sleepy members on the Government benches that 1982 had been one of the darkest times in New Zealand history. The Government had failed to achieve an economic investment strategy that would restore sound growth,

control inflation, or promote the export drive New Zealand needed to deal with the balance of payments problem. Mr Rowling said. The motion was supported bv Social Credit, but was lost. 41-42. The Economic Stabilisation Amendment Bill debated earlier had a stormy passage through the House, the Opposition attacking its content and the way in which the Government introduced it.
