Govt silent on airline deal
Parliamentary reporter The Government has declined to comment on the involvement of the chairman of Air New Zealand, Mr R. A. Owens, with the Chilean airline, LanChile. Mr M. K. Moore (Lab., Papanui) asked three questions in Parliament of the Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr Gair: © Was he aware that Mr Owens hoped to secure the general agency rights in New Zealand for LanChile for his own company, Owens Group
Services, Ltd? © If so, had he discussed the matter with Mr Owens? • What was the Government’s policy towards an issue such as this? Mr Gair said Mr Owens had told him by telephone that the company was involved in negotiations that might lead to the Owens Group’s securing general agency rights in New Zea- ■ land. Mr Owens had said that no agreement had been completed and that it might be
some months into next year before a decision was made whether to effect such an agreement.
Mr Gair said Mr Owens was mindful of his responsibilities as chairman of Air New Zealand and the importance of ensuring that he did not become involved in a conflict-of-interest situation.
Until the matter proceeded further and there was a clearer indication of the agreement, if any, to be effected he was unable to comment further.
