Rush angers Whip

PA Wellington The Labour Party’s Senior Whip, Mr J. L. Hunt, last evening strongly criticised the Government for its lastminute legislative rush.

A member of Parliament for 16 years, he said many Opposition members were angry at the way the Government had organised its legislative programme.

“I have never known so much important legislation dealt with during the last week of a session,” Mr Hunt said.

So far this week two bills signalling far-reaching changes — the Air Services Licensing Amendment .Bill and the Transport Amendment (No. 5) Bill — have been introduced by the Government.

As well, the Official Information Bill, described by the Minister of Justice, Mr McLay, as the most important measure introduced in the last 20 years, has been passed into law.

The controversial Accident Compensation Bill was another bill pushed through in the small hours. Some members have said they can see the House sitting through the night without a break, possibly' finishing at 11 a.m. today rather than the usual 1 p.m. Mr Hunt agreed that the House could continue through the night..
