Prince back in N.Z.
Prince Edward is back in Wellington after spending three days longer than expected in Antarctica. The Prince described his visit as probably the most memorable week of his life, “a unique chance to see the most extraordinary continent on our Earth and an experience I will never forget.” Prince Edward, who left Christchurch for Antarctica on December 8. returned to Christchurch aboard a United States Air Force Starlifter soon after 10.30 p.m. on
Wednesday. He flew to Wellington early yesterday morning and will spend Christmas at Government House. The Prince’s stay at Scott Base, as a guest of the superintendent of the Antarctic Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in Christchurch, Mr R. B. Thomson, was supposed to last five days. Sunspot activity prevented radio communication with Antarctica and disrupted flights, grounding planes for two days.
During his stay Prince Edward visited the South Pole, the Shackleton and Scott huts on Ross Island and McMurdo Station, and flew over the Dry Valleys by helicopter. He showed great enthusiasm and interest in all activities and especially enjoved dog sledging, ski-ing, and tramping. On his return to Wellington he sent messages to Scott Base and McMurdo Station saying how much he had enjoyed his stay.
