Youth team upset

PA Auckland .The flew Zealand youth soccer team yesterday returned from the Oceania tournament in Papua New Guinea disappointed with its failure to make the next round of the junior World Cup. “I'm disppointed for the' players." said the coach, Allan Jones, last evening. “They worked and trained hard for many months." Australia beat New Zealand, 4-3, in extra time to win the Port Moresby tournament and take the sole

position in the next round of the junior World Cup event. “Australia were very good," said Mr Jones. “In the end we couldn’t match their experience or contain their pace.” “Their side had built up an impressive record in internationals in the months beforehand." Despite the loss, Mr Jones was pleased with the team's performance. “We have some good players coming through;” he said. New Zealand scored more

goals—l 6 in four games—than any other team. Doug Todorya was the leading goalscorer with four, while Colin Tuaa was adjudged the player of the tournament. New Zealand led, 2-0, in the final but Australia equalised and scored twice in extra time to take the Oceania under-19 title. “Everyone there said it was the best and most exciting final in the history of the tournament,” said Mr Jones. “So it was good for the game generally.”
