N.Z. success should reap rich rewards

New Zealand’s entry to the semi-finals at the Esanda hockey tournament in Melbourne yesterday should immediately begin to reap benefits. By reaching the final four New Zealand should secure itself an expenses paid trip to the Champions Trophy tournament in Karachi early next year. The top six nations are traditionally invited to the tournament. Before the Esanda tournament West Germany indicated it would

not be going to Pakistan, which effectivly opened the door for New Zealand, which finished seventh at the World Cup in Bombay last January. Now that it has convincingly beaten West Germany and reached the semi-finals there is a stronger case for New Zealand’s inclusion in the Champions tournament. The succe’ss has improved New Zealand’s ranking to at least sixth in the world and that brings the team within the standard set by the New Zealand Sports Foundation

for help to prepare for the Los Angeles Olympics. Four weeks ago Sir Ronald Scott addressed the annual meeting of the New Zealand Hockey Association in Christchurch and said that if the New Zealand team could obtain an international ranking of sixth or better before 1984, the foundation should be able to assist the players. With a tour of Europe proposed next year, the N.Z.H.A. will be keeping the foundation to its word.
