Big crowds likely

NZPA Bundaberg Capacitv crowds are expected at'the Salter Oval in Bundaberg tomorrow when the town plays host to the first international to be held in a Queensland country centre. Charter buses have been hired to take supporters to the south-east Queensland town for the four-day match between New Zealand and Queensland, and there is tremendous interest despite the ansence of Greg Chappell and the fast bowler. Jeff Thomson.

Queensland's bowling stocks slumped yesterday with the dual withdrawals of Thomson and the fast bowler. John Maguire. Thomson notified his withdrawal because of an infected foot after the third test against England, while Maguire is undergoing treatment for a mystery back problem. A young medium-pacer. Michael Mainhardt; and a teenage batting star. Glenn Trimble, have been recalled to the State side to fill the gaps. The test century maker. Keppler Wessels, will captain Queensland for the first time, in Bundaberg. The Queensland side, which lost on the first innings to Tasmania this week, has been boosted by the return of test players, Alan Border. Wessels and Carl Rackemann from injury. While Queensland may be thin in the pace department its batting line-up should pose problems for New Zealand's bowlers.

Apart from Wessels and Border, Robbie Kerr, Trevor Hohns and Greg Ritchie are all capable run scorers.

Ritchie, who carried the drinks in the first two tests, showed his form with the bat against Tasmania and was well on the way to a century before his controversial run out when 60. The loss of Thomson and Maguire will put extra pressure on Rackemann, who is fighting to regain his test position.

Rackemann and the leftarm medium pace bowler, Harry Frei, will carry the Queensland bowling attack but the side has plenty of depth with Hohns, the allrounder Brett Henschell and Border in the line-up. The Bundaberg Cricket Association secretary, Matt Tallon, sajd yesterday he was hoping -that the match would attract about 10,000 people over the four days.
