Antarctic coal of poor quality
PA Wellington The possibility of commercial quantities of coal being mined in Antarctica is “extremely remote,” according to a geologist who has just made a detailed study of deposits there. If the coal deposits examined in Antarctica's Dry Valleys region were found in New Zealand or Australia, they would not be mined because the quality was so poor, said Dr John Bryan, managing director of a Sydney geological consulting company. “We had a map showing the location of several de-
posits over an area of about 950 sq. km, but neither the quality nor the quantity could’ possibly attract any commercial interest," he said. Dr Bryan visited the beacon supergroup formation of Shapeless Mountain and Mount Fleming, as part of a joint study by the New Zealand Geological Survey and the Antarctic coal measures study group of New South Wales. He has brought about 100 kg of samples back with him. which will be analysed in New Zealand and in Australia.
