Family off to Antarctic
The adventurous Poncet family last evening set sail from Governor’s Bay for the Antarctic Peninsula. On board the 15m yacht Damien II were Mr Jerome Poncet, his wife, Sally, their two children, Dion, aged three, and Liev, aged 21 months, as well as two crew — a Frenchman and a New Zealand woman. The Poncets, who have
berthed at Governor’s Bay for the last three months, will spend the summer cruising the icy coastline of the Antarctic. They will then sail to the Falkland Islands for the winter. Mr Poncet, a Frenchman, is an experienced yachtsman who has sailed to the Antarctic several times. He said Igst week that it
would take about 25 days to sail to the Antarctic. The family would sightsee, study the wildlife, and make trips ashore. Mr Poncet hoped to do some; cross-country ski-ing and even hang-gliding while ashore. Four books have already been written about his southern ventures and another may be written about this voyage.
