Sumner joins Manurewa

The New Zealand World Cup soccer captain, Steve Sumner, signed a one-season contract yesterday with the Auckland Rothmans league contender, Manurewa. Sumner, aged 27, had been the target of offers from several clubs, including Christchurch Mogal United, but the challenge of trying a new club and his past experience with those connected with Manurewa had influenced his decision.' “I know a lot of people

within the club and I’ve always had a lot of fun up there,” he said. Sumner, who spent last season playing for West Adelaide in the Australian Philips league, felt that living in Auckland would also be handy for any future international commitments he might have with the national team. Manurewa, managed by Russ Toyne, finished seventhequal on the national league points table last season.
