Papanui I captures three-fours lead

Papanui I pul itsrlt in a strong position to win di"tsion one of the three-fours bowls competition when it gained the maximum eight points against Redchffs I on Saturday. Papanui I will go into the final round next Saturday with 34 points, one more than South Brighton I. which managed seven points against Burnside I. The previous leader. Spreydon I. -lipped bat k to third. It had only one game win against Beckenham I. but with 31 points still has a chance. However, of these three top teams Papanui I looks to have the best cnance of a clean-sweep next Saturday. It meets lowly Riccarton Racecourse I. while South Brighton I has a tough opponent in Linwood I and Spreydon I could face problems against Mt Pleasant on the latter's green. The competition is clearly down to these three teams. Woolston W.M.C. I is fourth with 27 points and then come Beckenham I and Elmwood I. both 25. and Edgeware I on 23. Papanui teams are also in contention for division two and division three honours, but along with division four the groupings at the top are tight. In division two Rangiora I has 32 points. Papanui HI 31. Hornbv I 30. Morrison Avenue I 28. Burnside II and Riccarton W.M.C. I. both 26. and Christ-church-Richmond M.S.A. I 25. St Martins 11. on 24. leads the rest. Boon Hay 111 and Riccarton W.M.C. HI have 30. Edgeware 11l 29 and Beckenham 111 and Halswell II are not out of it either on 28. There are just two unbeaten teams remaining in the Robinson Shield, four others losing for the first lime on Saturday. The two with perfect records 'are Morrison Avenue I and Clpawa. There were 14 unbeaten learns in the Junior fours going unto Saturday's sixth round, but this number is now down to 10. The 10 are Burnside I. Cashmere 11. Dailington II and IV. New Brighton I. Papanui 111 and VII, Papanui W.M.C. IV. United and Woolston W.M.C. 111. Mt Pleasant held a clear lead going into Saturday's Penultimate Manning Cup round, but its one team lost and the race could now be between Rakaia. Elmwood. Papanui.
