Hagley Park

Sir,—Hagley Park should be an oasis where people can escape car pollution and fill their lungs with clean air. I was recently amazed by the very large number of cars parked near Victoria Lake. I am reminded of several fatuous projects put forward in the past which could have wrecked the park. Before World War I, it was seriously proposed to construct a horse-racing track in North Hagley Park. Again in the early 20s, some fools wished to construct houses along the river inside the park from Armagh Street Bridge to Carlton Mill Bridge. Not so long ago, a wide motorway was mooted connecting Riccarton Road with Armagh Street, and another motorway from that bridge to Fendalton Road. More recently, the reserves department ' effectively scotched the idea of connecting Fendalton Road with Salisbury Street. Another proposed fatuity was to blast a wide motorway through South Hagley Park to connect Blenheim Road with St Asaph Street and so it goes on. — Yours, etc., H. S. BA VERSTOCK. December 8, 1982.
