Prince to stay on Ice?

Sunspot activity may keep Prince Edward on the Ice longer than expected. The Prince left Christchurch for Antarctica, on Wednesday to visit historic sites and scientific projects. His stay at New Zealand's Scott Base was expected to last about five days, but sunspot activity has broken radio communication with Antarctica and disrupted flights. Two United States Navy Hercules aircraft have been grounded at McMurdo Sound for two days.

The information officer in the Antarctic Division of the D.5.1.R., Mr K. 0. Clegg, said that sunspot activity was a regular phenomenon which could last anything from hours to weeks.

“It has been going on since Tuesday and there is no sign of its letting up.” he said yesterday.

The official secretary at Government House in Wellington. Mr James Brown, said there were no worries about the Prince's movements. The date of his return had been deliberately left open because of the uncertain weather.

“It zwon’t cause any problems at all as long as he is home before Christmas." he said.
