Family to venture to Antarctic

Six adventurers, including two young children, will on Monday set sail from Governor's Bay for the Antarctic Peninsula. On board the 15m yacht Damien II will be Mr Jerome Poncet, his wife, Sally, their two children, Dion, aged three, and Liev, aged 21 months, as well as two crew — a Frenchman and a New Zealand woman.

Mr Poncet. no stranger to. the Antarctic, said they would probably spend the summer there before sailing to the Falkland Islands for the winter.

It would take about 25 days to sail to the Antarctic, he said. During the last two weeks, Mr Poncet has been busy making final arrangements for the voyage, buying in supplies, loading the yacht, and generally ensuring that everything is ship-shape. He was not sure when the family would next return to New Zealand.

While in the Antarctic they hope to cruise the icy coastline studying the scenery and wildlife, and on-shore possibly indulge in some ski-ing and even hang-gliding. Four books have already been written about Mr Poncet's southern ventures, and another might be written about this voyage.
