N.Z. success for Vietnamese girl

Five years ago, when Loan Bui Kim arrived in New Zealand, her English consisted only of the words, “hello” and “thank you.” ; In Masterton on Wednesday Loan, a Vietnamese refugee, received a cup for junior public speaking and the St Joseph’s College Old Boys Scholarship at the Chanel College prize-giving. The fourth-former topped her shorthand-typing class and received a diligence award for her efforts at school. With her parents, brother,
and sister she was among the estimated two million Vietnamese who took to the seas after the Communist regime took control of their country in 1975. The family was among 26 who spent days in an open craft without food and water before being rescued by the Thai authorities. After spending four months in Thailand the family came to New Zealand, settling in Masterton. Loan’s parents were elated about their daughter’s success and were both at the prize-giving.
