Parents oppose closing
Moves by the Education Department to close the Four Avenues School met solid opposition at a meeting of parents in Christchurch last evening. Almost all of the schools 72 pupils were represented at the meeting by at least one parent and many by two. They voted unanimously to oppose the closing, and to challenge the reasons advanced by the department for the proposal. The school's director. Mr Graham Mundy, said after the meeting that the parents thought it totally unacceptable that the department proposed relocating the pupils in other schools. “Other schools cannot guarantee the pupils the kind of alternative education they have opted for." he said. A resolution was passed to send a telegram to the Minister of Education.’ Mr Wellington. outlining the parents' opposition. and enough money was given to send a delegation of two to Welligton to see the Minister if necessary.
