Payroll theft charges
Charges of stealing $5961 in cash — a Railways Department payroll — were laid against two unemployed men who appeared before Judge Bisphan in the District Court yesterday. They are Frederick Llewellyn Williams, aged 32 (Mr S. G. Barker), and Philip Raroa, aged 30 (Mr M. J. Glue). For Williams, Mr Barker, who sought bail, said his client had two sureties and the charge would be defended. Williams was remanded to December 16 and allowed bail of $lOOO together with two sureties of the same amount.

tective Sergeant J. M. Lyall in the case of Williams. He said that the evidence against the defendant was substantial and that the alleged theft involved a New Zealand Railways payroll. Raroa was reman’ded without plea to December 16 oh bail of $l5OO. CHARGES DENIED A man charged with threatening to kill lan Stuart Craig, a traffic officer, and that with intent to injure he assaulted Mr Craig, denied the alleged offences. Glen Alexander Veitch, aged 19, a labourer (Mr S. G. Barker), is charged with having committed the offences on December 2. He was remanded to Janu-
ary 24 for a defended hearing. Bail was set at $2OOO. 18 OFFENCES A man. aged 24. convicted on 17 charges of fraud, involving $1560, and one charge of.- burglary, was remanded in’ custody to December 17 for a probation report and sentence. Arthur Edward Currey. unemployed (Mr R. A. Petersk admitted the offences which occurred in September and October. Detective Sergeant J. W. Lyall said that on October 22 Currey went to a shop where he purchased groceries, valued at $3O, which he paid for with a cheque made out.
in another’s name, for $223. He told the shopkeeper that it was a wages cheque, endorsed it, and was given $193 change. He returned again to the same shop and repeated a similar transaction. In May -the defendant opened a cheque account with the Woolston Post Office with an initial deposit of $7O and a further deposit of $4OO. By September the defendant’s account was overdrawn and he was asked by the bank to get it -back into a credit situation. Between September 24 and October 14 Currey transacted a further 15 -cheques for goods and cash to a total value of $1205. Compensation of this amount was sought. In explanation Currey told the police that he needed the cash, said Sergeant Lyall. Currey had pleaded guilty earlier to a charge of burglary committed on September 14.
