‘Street kids’ find work
Some of Christchurch’s "street kids” and their friends have found work cutting and selling Christmas trees from the Selwyn plantation near Darfield. Pictured above, from left, are Rangi, aged 16; Timoti, aged 17; Desmond, aged 22; and Jason, aged nine. The initiative came from an unemployed Rangiora man who preferred not to be identified. "It is the kids' project,” he said. They have cut about 1000 trees, more than 200 of which are stored at Lighthouse Youth Ministries, 463 Worcester Street. The proceeds will be used to assist with the running of the house and to help pay the rent. It is a popular shelter for homeless children of whom there will be “even more over Christmas.” The trees were cut on Thursday and by yesterday a truckload had been sold. Prices range from $3 for the larger trees to $1 for the smaller ones.
