Chch couple killed on Lindis
A Christchurch couple died when their car crashed up-side-down into the Lindis riverbed in Central Otago on Thursday evening. They were Gavin Ogilvie, aged 52. a consulting engineer, of 5 Garth Terrace. Cashmere; and his wife. Margaret Joan Ogilvie.
Two Australian hitchhikers who had been picked up by the Ogilvies were injured in the crash, but their names and condition were not available last evening. A spokesman for the Cromwell police described the car as a dreadful mess. The Australians had been lucky to get out alive, he said. The accident occurred about 7.30 p.m. at the oneway Elliotts bridge, on the Lindis Pass highway about 14km on the Omarama side of Tarras. No other vehicle was involved.
Mr Ogilvie, a partner in the firm of Davis Ogilvie and Partners for the last 20 years, was a well known consultant engineer. He was also a long-serving Rotarian and St John Ambulance brigadesman. and served two terms on the Christchurch Drainage Board.
After attending Cashmere School and St Andrew's College. Mr Ogilvie studied at Canterbury University and graduated' bachelor of civil engineering in 1952. He worked for the engineering firm of Campbell. Hamman and Partners before travelling overseas and working in Britain and Canada. When he returned to New Zealand in the late 1950 s Mr Ogilvie was resident engineer at the Christchurch Drainage Board's treatment plant. In 1960, he joined J. L. Davis and Son, and formed the partnership of Davis, Ogilvie and Partners. Mr Ogilvie joined the St John Ambulance Brigade in 1963, was chairman of its finance committee in 1971, was made a serving brother in 1977. and promoted to officer in 1980. He was also an active member of the Christchurch Rotary Club.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter. ’
