Chappell scores test century
j NZPA Adelaide The former rivals for the Australian captaincy, Greg Chappell and Kim Hughes, struck up a magnificent century partnership on the opening day of the third test in Adelaide yesterday to place Australia in a commanding position against England. Chappell scored his first test century in Adelaide with some very aggressive stroke making which yielded 17 fours in 213 minutes. The Australian captain combined with Hughes to add 126 runs in 169 minutes for the third wicket, carrying on aggressively after a confident opening by Kepler Wessels and John Dyson of 76 runs. Chappell was dismissed only ten minutes before stumps for 115 when he cut

Willis tried to intimidate the batsmen with some fiery short-pitched deliveries when the tall order of bowling Australia out on a slow pitch gradually became apparent. He had won the toss and sent Australia into bat but the gamble did not pay off. with Australia finishing the day at 265 for three with Hughes unbeaten on 51 and the nightwatchman.
