‘Street kids’ house

A large inner city house has been offered by a private landlord as accommodation for the “street kids” of Christchurch. Negotiations were under way on a tenancy agreement, the Christchurch City Missioned the Rev. David Morrell, said last evening. Mr Morrell said that he believed that the house had eight or nine bedrooms, and was vacant. The “street kids” trust was negotiating tenancy and lease arrangements with legal assistance. The offer of a house did not mean that a Government emergency house — being sought through the City Council, the Catholic Social Services organisation, and the Anglican City Mission, would not be needed, said Mr Morrell. “It seems likely that more than one house would be required.” The running of a special house could be a joint responsibility of community groups, detached youth workers and the young people themselves.
