Couldwell on the road

The former New Zealand 3000 m steeplechase champion. Martin Couldwell. currently living in England, has switched his emphasis to the road with outstanding success. Since recording 2hr 16min in the Rome marathon in March. Couldwell has received more invitations to run in Europe than he can possibly accept. His most recent performances have put him in even greater demand. In a recent 16km road race in Paris he finished seventh among 25.000 starters, breaking 48min for the distance for the first time. This attracted an invitation to compete in the ParisVersailles road race, something he found rather ironic because his earlier apolication for entry had been rejected. Over a very hilly course. Couldwell finished fifth. In between the two Paris races, he competed in a road race in Imola. Italy, finishing second from a field of 6000 to the Belgium Emil Puttemuns. Since then, he has won another road race in Cesena, italy. by 100 m. His next major event is an international cross-country event at Gateshead, in England. Couldwell.' a crosscountry runner of some note when he was in New Zealand. will run for the Rest of the World against the Home Counties and Europe. Last northern summer. Couldw-ell ran only once on the track, a 10,000 m at Crystal Palace in London. His time of 28min 58.7 s was a personal best. Rml Dezz:
