Teacher training bursary

Sir,—Who wants to become a teacher? It means a tertiary bursary of about $lOOO a year but on top of that compulsory membership of government superannuation at a cost of approximately $BOO a year. Payment may be deferred, but will accumulate to a debt of $3200 over four years. Nobody can tell as of today whether this will be interest free or not and the time over which payments may be spread. A far more economical method would be for prospective students to decline the offer from the Department of Education and just go for three years to university. If after three years they still feel like teaching, then one more year at Teachers’ College will only cost them $BOO in superannuation. By that time they are also old enough to apply for hardship allowance.—Yours, etc., J. G. JOOSTEN. December 8, 1982.
