Labour bill rejected
PA Wellington The Government has thrown out of Parliament an Opposition private member’s bill advocating a new Minister of Employment and a five-year plan for full employment. The Full Employment Planning Bill had been sponsored by Mr Peter Neilson (Lab.. Miramar).
It was rejected at its introduction on a division, 32-31. National members said the bill would not work and that the Government already had in place policies aimed at countering unemployment. Labour, however, wanted a Minister of Employment appointed because, as Mr Neilson said, the Minister of Labour was “tied up” with industrial relations issues.
