Aust, to tighten grip on passports

NZPA Canberra The Federal Government is to bring in wide-ranging security controls on the issue of Australian passports. The move comes after revelations in the Stewart Royal Commission's interim report on drugs oh the ease with which passports could be illegally obtained. The Foreign Affairs Minister; Mr Tony Street, said that the main changes would involve applicants identity requirements. A new computerised system will also be introduced to overcome the use of aliases. Mr Street told the House of Representatives that official post offices would be used as agencies for passport offices. Senior postal clerks will be trained to authorise applications, check applications, certify photographs and forward the documents to passport offices where they will be further checked. Mr Street said that this provision would be phased in over 18 months. People able to sign certificates regarding • an applicant’s identity will also be restricted.
