Cruise squadron in the wings
NZPA-Reuter Washington The first squadron of American strategic bombers to be armed with long-range cruise missiles will go on duty at a United States Air Force base, near New York on December 16, the Air Force announced yesterday. Each of the 16 B52Gs will be able to carry 12 of the highly-accurate. 2400kmrange missiles. They form part of the United States plan to modernise its nuclear deterrent started by President Jimmy Carter and continued by President Ronald Reagan. Air Force officials said that ultimately 105 of the 170 852 G bombers in the Strate-
gic Air Command will be fitted with wing pylons to •carry the cruise missiles. They said that deployment of all 105 B52Gs should be com‘‘‘pleted by the end of 1985. In addition, ’ all nine of S.A.C.’s more modern B52Hs will be fitted with 20 cruise missiles each, with work to begin in 1985. The remaining 852 S in S.A.C.’s fleet of 300 will continue to carry nuclear bombs or short-range attack missiles. Boeing, the maker of the 852, was awarded, a SUS2S7 million Air Force contract yesterday for production of 400 air-launched cruise missiles and related parts and services.
