Sobering cricket lesson
PA Wellington Eleven of Wellington's Shell Series cricket aspirants received a sobering lesson on the first day of their match against Australian Capital Territory at the Basin Reserve yesterday. The visitors mustered 272 for 6 in their first innings in 423 minutes but had Wellington’s bowling and fielding been closer to the standard necessary for the forthcoming series, ‘A.C.T. would have struggled. Too much of the Wellington bowling was ill-directed and the fielding showed a number of players were not up to fitness. . Although the Middlesex profes-
sional, Kevin James. Steve Maguiness and Alan Telford all showed glimpses of the' bowling ability expected, the Australian batsmen received too many liberties. Through it all the solid lefthander, Peter Woods, emerged with 122 not out. Wellington appealed for a catch behind when he was 5 and he was dropped at second slip by the captain, Richard Pither, on 24. Though his first 50 runs had few memorable shots, Woods stayed on. His two partnerships were 74 in 109 minutes for the sixth wicket with Alan Watchman and an unbeaten 84 with Abdul Rizvi
