Tutor scheme ‘impossible’
New prerequisites for nursing tutors by the Nursing Council would be impossible to implement Jn New Zealand, said the North Canterbury Hospital Board's medical superintendent-in-chief, Dr R. A. Fairgray, yesterday. “No hospital-based school of nursing could meet the new requirements," Dr Fairgray told members of the board’s health services committee vesterdav. The committee was considering a circular letter from the Nursing Council which said that, from 1985, 70 per cent of the tutors, at the school of nursing would have to meet certain criteria.
The four mam requirements for nursing tutors would be registration as a nurse, corresponding with the area of specialty in which the tutor is teaching; three years full-time nursing after registration; further studies in nursing to at least diploma level; and an education course for nurse tutors.
Principal tutors, under the new requirements, must have completed a university degree with an education component, as well as having had experience as a nursing tutor.
Dr Fairgray said the requirements for a nursing tutor would mean an eightyear training period for the post. “That is quite a commitment being asked for from nurses wanting to become tutors,” he said.
In addition, the training of tutors in Christchurch was the cause of additional concern to the board, because there was no training centre for them in the South Island.
“We have tried to establish some form of training for nursing tutors here but so far we have had no success." said Dr Fairgray. “It concerns us very much.”
