Sold wool to pay rent

A man who admitted receiving wool, valued at $144. told the police that he later sold it to pay the rent on his flat, said Sergeant M. South in the District Court yesterday. Jeff Alec Hunt, aged 21. a factory hand, pleaded guilty to receiving the wool, and to possessing cannabis seeds. He was convicted by Judge Frampton and fined $125 and orderd to pay compensation of $144. Sergeant South said that the wool,. the property of Kapatone Wool Scour, was stolen on September 3. After receiving the wool the defendant took it to a firm at Yaldhurst and was paid $144. While searching the defendant's Belfast home the police found 82 cannabis seeds in the bedroom and kitchen. Counsel (Mr M. J. Glue) said that the defendant, who was out of work at the time, had been given the wool by his brother who was staying at the flat. The cannabis seeds had been given to Hunt but no attempt had been made to cultivate them, said Mr Glue. BURGLARIES Two young men, who admitted burgling a Fitzgerald Avenue food bar on November 30, were convicted and remanded in custody to December 15 for probation reports and sentence. They are: Raymond Walker, aged 26, unemployed, and Paul Leo Kire, aged 22, also unemployed. Sergeant South said that at 11.30 p.m. on November 30,

acting on information received from a member of the public, the police went to the food store where the two defendants were apprehended on the roof. Walker had in his possession a screwdriver, a knife, and a cheque book. He told the police he wanted to get some money with which to buy beer. Sergeant South said. Damage to the food bar amounted to $lOO and compensation of $5O from each defendant was sought. Inquiries into the cheque book, plus $45 found in Walker's possession, revealed that it belonged to a man staying at the Station Hotel in Moorhouse Avenue. Walker also admitted and was convicted on a charge of breaking into the hotel room the same day. Walker asserted that he had been drinking in the hotel earlier in the day and that he had found the cheque book on the floor, said Sergeant South. Compensation of $45 was sought from Walker. Remanding Walker in custody the Judge said it was the defendant's fourth appearance in court this year on a charge of dishonesty. PERIODIC DETENTION An unemployed man who was convicted of breaking into two rooms at the United Service Hotel, burgling a shop at Clinton, and a breach of probation, was sentenced to periodic detention for six months. . SEX CHARGE A man. aged 51, charged with having sexual intercourse with a girl, aged 15. was remanded on bail of $lOOO to December 15. No plea was entered by Raymond Stanley Leonard Kale, a beneficiary, who is charged with committing the offence on December 6. An application for interim suppression of the defendant's name by a duty solicitor (Miss F. Bolwell) was refused. As a condition of bail Kale was ordered to stay away from the complainant during the remand period. CHARGES DENIED A man facing four traffic charges — one of them for causing bodily injury — was remanded on bail to March 14 for a defended hearing. Michael Colin Waine, aged 28. a sickness beneficiary (Mr G. R. Lascelles) face’s charges of causing bodily injury to John Keith Wells by driving a vehicle on Wainoni and Kerrs Roads in a dangerous manner, driving while disqualified, driving with an excess blood alcohol level, and being in charge of a vehicle with an excess blood alcohol level did, by an act or omission, cause bodily injury to Mr Wells. The four offences are all said to have taken place on August 21. THEFT CHARGE An unemployed man charged with stealing $l2l in

cash on November 20 denied the alleged offence. Shaun Kevin McAllister, aged 21. (Mr P. N. Dyhrberg) was remanded on bail to January 22 for a defended hearing. The money was the propertv of Roses Carpets. Ltd. 'ORNAMENT' A youth, aged 17, who admitted stealing a Press honesty box in Pages Road on December 5 told the police he was taking it home because he thought it would make “a good ornament" for his room, said Sergeant South. Jon Pierre Holmes, unemplpyed. was convicted and fined $5O. Sergeant South said the defendant came across the honesty box, valued at $3O. the property of the Christchurch Press Company. Ltd. at 2.30 a.m., picked it up and carried it off. On being seen by a police patrol Holmes put the box down. Mr N. C. Chapman, a duty solicitor, said Holmes, a first offender, was under the influence of alcohol, having earlier beep to a party at New Brighton. DEPOSITIONS A solo mother facing four charges of burglary elected trial by jury. Caroline Louise Bennetts, aged 22, was remanded on bail to March 24 for the taking of depositions. It is alleged she burgled properties in Hargood Street. Lionel Street, Paparoa 1 Street, and Ilam Road, between September 30 and November 12.
