Teachers’ College principal to retire
Dr J. F. Mann (above), who has been principal of the Christchurch' Teachers' College since 1975, will retire in May. His resignation was accepted at a meeting of the Christchurch Teachers’ College Council yesterday. “No man could have done more for this college and for education in New Zealand than Dr Mann,” said the council's chairman, Mr E. C. Robinson. Starting at the college as a lecturer in education in 1958, Dr Mann has since served as senior lecturer, as viceprincipal, and as principal of the primary division. He holds an M.A. degree from the University of Canterbury and a doctorate from the University of London,where he held the Imperial Relations Trust Fellowship in 1959. Dr Mann, who is 57, was born in Christchurch and attended Christchurch Technical College before training at the Christchurch Teachers’ College and completing a specialist physical education course at Otago University in 1945. After relieving reaching at several schools he held the post of assistant organiser in physical education for Canterbury schools between 1946 and 1951. Between 1951 and 1958 he attended university, taught at Heaton Intermediate School, and was liaison officer of physical education for Canterbury secondary schools. Dr Mann was president of the Teachers Colleges’ Association between 1961 and 1963, and chairman of'the Teachers College Principals’ Association betwen 1970 and 1977. He was a McKenzie Education Fellow in 1971. He played hockey for Canterbury, Otago, the South Island, and New Zealand Universities, and has served the Canterbury Hockey Association and the University Men’s Hockey Council.
