Hot pool amoebas

PA Palmerston North People should not panic about hot pool amoebas, said the head of Massey University's amoeba unit yesterday. “If people act responsibily, and do not put their heads under the water or splash about in hot pools, the dangers are no more than driving a car or swimming in the sea.” said Dr Tim Brown. New Zealanders had a high level of antibodies to the amoeba. “But we should make efforts to improve pool conditions to reduce the number of amoeba,” he said. The amoeba which can cause a fatal disease, primary amoebic meningitis, was found recently in a thermal pool at Ngawha, near Kaikohe. The tiny organisms enter the body through the nose and destroy the brain.
