Kiwis get dole queue warning

PA Ashburton New Zealanders were always welcomed in Australia but now they might end up in the dole queues, said the secretary of the South Australian branch of the Federated Clerks’ Union of Australia, Mr Harry Krantz, in Ashburton. Mr Krantz said that many Australians were becoming inter-state “nomads” as they searched for work. Unemployment had topped 500.000. Mr Krantz is a visitor to the New Zealand Clerical Workers’ Union conference. Worst affected by unemployment, he said in an inter-

view, were young people up to the age of 19. Living standards are also under attack by the recession in Australia. Not all wages had kept pace with the consumers price index, and their value had been eroded .by inflation, he said. He believed that the Government and unions needed to work together to restore, maintain, and enlarge employment opportunities. “New Zealanders are always welcomed in Australia, but now if they are coming for a job they might end up in the dole queues,” Mr Krantz said.
