Calculators allowed for U.E. exams

PA Wellington The University Entrance Board says the use of calculators will be permitted in all its examinations from next vear. Until now, the board has allowed calculators in selected mathematical papers only. The board also administers the bursary and scholarship examinations and the calculator free-for-all will apply in all papers here as well. The board's secretary. Mr Michael Murtagh, said teachers taking chemistry and accounting had told the board that students were being disadvantaged by the ban on calculators. It was argued that students could waste valuable examination time when they suddenly found themselves without the now common mathematical aid. The School Certificate Examination Board is allowing calculators next year in mathematics and science for the first time.
