Spirit of New Zealand

Sir,—Re the Spirit of New Zealand (“The Press,” page 14, December 3), the vessel shown is rigged as a barquentine not as a brigantine as stated. A brigantine has two masts only. A barquentine has three or more masts. Page 25 of the same date displays a photograph of Terry McCombs as stroke oar in Akaroa in. 1930 which has the S.S. Maori in the background but the caption is wrong in claiming a fishing boat was sunk during World War II by the battery at Godley Head. The vessel in question was the Dolphin and it was sunk by Battery Point guns—Yours, etc., B. NORRIS. Curator, Lyttelton Historical Museum Society, Inc. December 5, 1982.
