Maternity hospital at Foxton to close
PA Wellington Foxton’s maternity hospital will close, saving the Palmerston North Hospital Board $150,000 a year, the Minister of Health, Mr Malcolm, has said. The savings will be used by the board to strengthen its other obstetric services, and a domiciliary nursing service will be maintained for Foxton, Mr Malcolm said. The hospital will continue to be used as a base for the Foxton meals-on-wheels service and for ante-natal classes. Its use, however, as a maternity hospital could no longer be justified taking into account the low birth numbers and the closeness of both the Levin and Palmerston North obstetric services,' Mr Malcolm said. A sharp decline in births at the Foxton hospital meant the numbers were now half those of 10 years ago, he said.
