Kaiapoi council plans cut

Ways to prune the number of Kaiapoi Borough Council meetings will be investigated. Cr P. I. Redmond told the council’s finance committee on Monday evening that it was ludicrous to have the same number of councillors attend the committee meeting and then the full council meeting next week. Two neighbouring local authorities had abolished their committees, and Kaiapoi should also look at changes, he said. Other councillors said the present system had ' some good points, but Cr A. H. Blackie agreed that council procedure was sometimes cumbersome. “I think we suffer a little bit from Parkinson’s law in that work will expand to fit the time that you sit round the table,” he said. The committee recommended that the Mayor. Mr H. W. Cumberland, prepare a report on possible alternatives in consultation with staff officers, for the council to consider next month.
