C.E.R.
Sir, — C.E.R. is one of many disastrous changes made by the National Government. It is even more horrifying to see the Labour Party ignore its own conference and ■ employment policies and end up supporting C.E.R. Labour offers no alternative. The removal of quantitative import restrictions combined with the 50 per cent area content rule and Australia’s more liberal access policy for Asian imports, means that C.E.R. will force us to compete with Asian wages. New Zealand manufacturers have been appeased by the promise of half the import licences which will help to protect their profits but will not save jobs. The Labour Party should announce that the party, when the Government, will immediately throw out C.E.R. To see Labour support C.E.R. in Parliament is a tragedy because it illustrates more vividly than ever that the party offers no alternative economic policy and has now completely abandoned the working class, — Yours, etc.,
