Bands for New Year in Square

Three bands, each with a different type of music, will probably enliven festivities in Cathedral Square on New Year’s Eve. The bands would perform free of charge under a Christchurch City Council clean air and health committee recommendation, but the council would provide about $lBO to hire a flat-deck truck for a stage and provide a power supply for sound and lighting. Each band would play for about 45 minutes from 10 p.m. They would perform country and western, newwave, and rock and roll music until 12.45 a.m. Entertainment was suggested last month by Cr D. C. Close, who said that last year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Square did not enter the spirit of the occasion until the morris dancers arrived. Both traffic and the drinking or possession of alcoholic beverages will be banned from the Square during the festivities.
