The author of “Winston Churchill, The Wilderness Years,” Martin Gilbert, was born in London in 1936. Graduating from Magdalen College, Oxford, with a first class honours degree in modern history in 1960, he then spent two years as a researcher, scholar at St Antony’s College, Oxford, working in British Imperial history and Soviet studies. • In 1962 he began work as a research assistant to Randolph Churchill on the first two volumes of the official biography of Sir Winston Churchill. Following ' Randolph Churchill’s death in 1968, Martin Gilbert was ap-

pointed official biographer, and has published since three main volumes of narrative, and three sets of document volumes. During the course of his 20 years of research on Churchill, Martin Gilbert has also written a number of books on recent British and European history, and is the author of a series of 12 historical atlases. He has also lectured widely in Britain, Europe and. the United States of America. Since 1976 he has been closely involved in the' preparation of the television series of Churchill’s wilderness decade.
