Joyarty leading prospect in first leg at Beaumont
Special correspondent Dunedin Joyartj - will be expected to pay expenses for a trip to Avondale by winning the Palisade Gold Cup for the second time at the Beaumont Racing Club's meeting tomorrow. Joyarty looked on the verge of a win when she came from back in the field for fourth in the Canterbury Cup on November 10. She missed a race on November 22 when the Southland meeting was abandoned but she had a run over 2000 m at the Wingatui trials last Sunday. She has 57kg. which does not look excessive for a mare which won the Wellington Racing Club and Great Autumn Handicaps last season. She carried 56kg in the latter event, which had a 50.5 kg minimum. Apart from her win last year, when she carried 52.5 kg or 2kg above the minimum'. Joyarty has had another win and an unlucky second to Helen’s Ridge at Beaumont meetings. Helen's Ridge, now seven, has not shaped like a threat in her recent racing but she has shown a liking for Beaumont. Double D’Or, like Joyarty, a six-year-old mare by Noble Bijou, looks capable of a bold bid. She ran Auditory close over 1600 m at Invercargill last month and should be better suited by a middle distance. Myra May,' a half-sister to Joyarty, has a win in the Gore Cup in October to recommend her chance. Peck and Valraine. the principals in the finish of the main sprint at the Southland meeting last month, should again be prominent in the Ashley Powell Memorial Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Valraine, which lost by a nose could turn the tables with a I.skg turnaround in the weights. J Vai Christophers, who races the mare in partnership with Brian Anderton's wife, Lorraine, is also the ownpr of Double d’Or. The Andertons’ son, Shane, will ride Peck.
