Fur auction first in N.I. for 40 years
PA Wellington The first fur auction in the North Island for about 40 years has been held in Wellington. Prices were described as satisfactory in view of the depressed market. A Timaru-based firm. Sheepskin Exports (N.Z.). has set up the central auction for graded opossum skins. The auction would make available a large percentage of North Island opossum skins, according to New Zealand Fur Auctions, a division of Sheepskin Exports. The only other fur auction is at Dunedin, where auctions havb been held for about 50 years. Top quality large brown skins
fetched $12.50. and top large grey skins $l3; top medium to large $9.70; top medium to large grey $10.30; top medium brown. $6.50: top medium grey. $6. Prices appeared to be slightly up on recent Dunedin sales, said Mr Don Campbell, the firm's manager. The main buyers were the United States. Germany, and Korea. A North Island tanner paid a top price of $25 for a large wild fitch (ferret) skin, one of three on offer. The auction would be open to all fur. not just opossum and fitch. Mr Campbell said. The next sale will be held in March, and regular sales later.
