Values Party gives awards
The Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, has had a pat on the back" from the Values Party for improving the “people" environment of the city.
Sir Hamish was one of 10 recipients of the party’s tenth anniversary awards, presented at the week-end. The awards were made to persons whose work and ’ organisations had made a big contribution to the social and physical environment of Christchurch during the last decade. Sir Hamish has been Mayor of Christchurch for most of the last decade, during which time the Christchurch City Council has been one of the most : progressive in New Zealand, according to a Values leader, Dr Alan Wilkinson. "Sir Hamish has' made a major personal- contribution to the. new marae project and has created an atmosphere of. constructive good will which has been noticeably lacking in some other politicians,” he said. Ms Wendy Browne gained an award for her work in establishing and maintaining the Christchurch Environ-. ment Centre; Mrs Helen Chambers for establishing the Patients’ Rights group; Messrs Hori Brennan and Peter Heal for their work with the new marae, Nga Hau E Wha; Mrs Doris and Dr John Church for running the Battered Women’s Sup-
port Group; Messrs Murray Cree and David Robinson for setting up the Salisbury Street Foundation; Mr Rod Donald for his work with the Avon Loop community; Mr Peter. Dunbar for his work with the Christchurch Arts Centre; Mr Robin Duff for setting up groups working for Gay rights: and The Health Alternatives for Women collective, for their support for women’s health in Christchurch.
