Soviet shift predicted
NZPA Paris Changes in Soviet policy towards Afghanistan were, forecast yesterday by the French President' Mr Francois Mitterrand, in an interview published by “Le Monde.” Mr Mitterand, interviewed before he left for visits to Egypt and India, added . that he also had detected shifts in the importance of'the new Soviet leadership attaches to
Asia. The emergence of Yuri Andropov as head of the Soviet Communist Party would inevitably alter Moscow’s actions, he said, j. “I more expect movement from the new Soviet leadership on Afghanistan than on Poland. In this context, the first meetings that Mr Andropov has held, with China, India and Pakistan, are significant. The West may well
soon regret that it has underestimated Asia.” Mr Mitterand said that France’s own policy towards the Soviet Union was unaffected by the transition of power in the Kremlin. “Russia’s .nuclear forces in Europe, tactical and otherwise, added to its conventional forces, create an imbalance which must be corrected, he told “Le Monde.” “I will continue to jay so.”
