Abortion clinic
Sir, — When the Catholic Church made Galileo repeat “The sun ' goes around the earth” he was really being made to say: “I will not question the authority of the Church.” Now the Church decrees “Life begins at conception” — a moral sledgehammer aimed at an issue in which the Church holds as little understanding and interest as it had in Galilean physics. Most people would be unable to explain what caused Galileo to differ from his Church or how he was subsequently proved right. Perhaps more can see the blindfolds worn by current Church proclamations on contraception and abortion. The present controversy will cause as serious and long-lasting damage to the Church and to Catholics as did. the Church’s split with science. — Yours, etc.,
ALAN WILKINSON. November 24. 1982.
