New Marsden rate $6.45

PA Auckland The new ruling rate for tradesmen working oh the Marsden Point oil refinery shutdown will be $6.45 an hour.

The agreement, covering the four-week maintenance work, has been ratified by the Wage Freeze Authority. A New Zealand Refining Company spokesman said that the' new rate for core tradesmen compared with $4.55 an hour in the previous agreement, negotiated in April. 1980. The many allowances had moved by a similar percentage. and reflected what had happened to average wage rates in comparable trades over the period.

The company, the Federation of Labour, and the unions reached a settlement of the agreement earlier this month after a protracted dispute delayed the shutdown by about four weeks. The original eight-week maintenance programme has since been revised and shortened by the company and the refinery is due to'start on December 8.

It is expected that production will begin after an eightday to 10-day warm-up period.

More than 500 workers are reported to be on site for the shutdown, which is progressing smoothly and on schedule.
