Sound demand for store cattle

The best store cattle offered at Addington market yesterdaj' sold at prices above expectations. The recent drop in the local beef schedule combined with the drying effect of the prevalent north-westerlies was expected to depress the tone of the market. Well grown yearlings and adult cattie, especially steers, were in good demand. ’ Local graziers faced strong competition from West Coast and Banks Peninsula buyers.

A highlight of the market was the sale of 47 Hereford -steers from Cheviot. These made between $290 and $3OO.

Better yearling steers sold between $l4O and $lB5 and better yearling heifers from $126 to $l6B. Other vearlings were down to $75.

The quality of the yearlings offered did vary considerably. Too many showed signs of a difficult winter and these would obviously require plenty of feeding.

In the adult cattle section the situation was much the same.

Buyers were looking for stock which could be reasonably quickly flattened. Lighter sorts were difficult to sell.

The yearling yarding totalled 1097 and 367’ adults were

offered. Sales of store cattle included: - Yearlings: D. J, and D. L. McKenzie (Waiau), 20 HerefordAngus steers at $lB2 to $l9O. 12 Hereford-Angus heifers at $150: Brooklea Farm (Brookside).
