Tom Robinson and band, ,and Midnight Oil (above), are the latest confirmations for the Sweetwaters Festival, . at Ngaruawabia, on January 2931. They join the previously announced Toots and the Maytals, the Psychedelic Furs, and The Church. Other international acts have have. yet to be named. The festival organisers say it’s the Tom Robinson Band coming, but, as the original T.RJB. broke up in 1979, it’s more likely to be the man himself, with a new band. Robinson has just released a new. "■ album, (“North” By .Northwest," .and lately he has been working with Peter Gabriel. " : A.
Midnight Oil, who have played several times in Christchurch, are in England now, gaining a reputation on the hard rock circuit. The band is'still fronted by ; 'the imposing, bald wildman, Peter Garrett;' 1 . ’ Mail 1 orders for festival tickets have been the best yet, ‘say the organisers. V
The latest propeller Records sheet warns of several forthcoming record releases, including the label’s singles album, “Doobie Doo Disc,” and the new Birthday Party album, “Junkyard.” The cover of “Junkyard” was designed by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, one of the band’s heroes. Roth was the artist responsible for many a T-shirt and'bubble gum card (“hot rodders”) in the late 1960 s and early 19705.
The album is the follow-up to /‘Prayers On Fire,” which sold quite well in New Zealand.
Other new .discs include a Screaming-MeeMees twelveinch, “Dancing . With Stars In My Eyes”/“Day Goes By,” “Standards,” an EP by Don McGlashan (Blam Blam Blam) and Ivan Zagni; and, out now, singles by the Bongos (“Monotony”) and the Prime Movers (“Crying Again”). On the news front, three of the Newmatics have reformed with others, as the Milton , Stowaways and. the Screaming ' MeeMees’ November North Island tour had tb be cancelled due to illness..
In light of the "No Tag” , EP, Propeller has publicly- - dissociated itself from “Nazism or facism” after an accusation in the “Listener” recently.'that the EP was New ■ Zealand’s, “first Nazi record.” Propeller says it is considering further action on the article.
